Description

Upper Dolpo is a high-altitude region located at the rain-shadowed area of the Himalaya in the upper part of western Nepal. Upper Dolpo’s natural beauty and stunning charm is unsurpassed. Until 1989, foreigners were not permitted to trek to this isolated part of Nepal. Trekking to this remote part of the world ignites the sense of adventure among its visitors.

Here we do not find lush green hills nourished by monsoon except a thrilling hardcore terrain, surrounded by impressive towering peaks. During the trek, you will visit the ancient villages, spectacular landscapes, authentic Buddhist monasteries, and Shey Phoksundo Lake. This lake is the deepest lake of Nepal with its 165 meters depth according to a survey by the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology. If you are lucky, you may encounter wildlife such as  Blue sheep, mountain goat, jackal, wolf and snow leopard.

The people of Dolpo have still preserved Tibetan culture in pure form, making it attractive to foreigners. The customs and traditions of this remote Upper Dolpo are as similar as to those of Tibet.  Bon is the main religion whose origins precede Buddhism. If you are looking for some overwhelming and impressive panorama in Nepal, Dolpo will be your best choice. It was in Upper Dolpo where the 1999 Oscar-nominated film Himalaya and more recently the German documentary Dolpo Tulku were shot. Religiously upper Dolpo region is very significant as hundreds of  Buddhist pilgrims visit a holy mountain called ‘Crystal Mountain’  of the region to make a circuit of the mountain every year. The majority of people of this region speak in the Tibetan language. Hardly some people understand the Nepali language though it is the national language.

Journey to Upper Dolpo begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj. It takes about 45 minutes. The following morning we board on another flight that takes us to  Jhupal. From Juphal we begin the trek to  Dunai and end in Dunai.  The best time to this trek is either summer and or monsoon. Winter season is not favorable for trekking to Upper Dolpo because of the heavy snowfall. A full board organized camping trek in a group with our trekking crew and a special area permit is required. This trek is most suitable for those who are exceptionally fit and prepared to face the full challenges of the wilderness.
